Privacy Statement

The Municipal Employees Benefits Program (MEBP) is committed to protecting the privacy, confidentiality, accuracy and security of the personal information it collects, uses, retains and discloses in the course of conducting business.

MEBP has always been dedicated to protecting our Member’s privacy and ensuring personal information remains confidential. Personal Information relates to any information that identifies and individual other than their business contact information. We recognize and respect our Member’s right to control the collection, use and disclosure of their personal information. We have a privacy policy, procedures and practices in place, and have an appointed Privacy Officer.

Personal information is collected and used for the following purposes only:

to verify identity,
to determine eligibility for benefits,
to provide statements about Plan benefits,
to fulfill legal and regulatory requirements,
to disclose to pertinent third parties (ie: actuary and insurance carrier) where required, for administration purposes,
to manage and administer the terms of the MEBP plans,
to meet and maintain the highest standards of service.

Our Privacy Policy incorporates the following ten principles:

Accountability - to keep and protect Member personal information
Identifying purposes - to ensure the use of personal information is necessary
Consent - to let us use or disclose personal information to manage and administer the terms of your Plans, and
Limiting collection - to gather only what is needed for as long as it is needed
Limiting use, disclosure and retention - to fulfil the purpose for which it was collected (or as required by law)
Accuracy - to guarantee that personal information is accurate, complete and current
Safeguards - to store personal information using appropriate security safeguards
Openness - to let Member’s obtain information on our policy and procedures
Individual's access - to provide Member’s with their own personal information when requested
Handling inquiries or complaints - to give you individual access to our Privacy Officer

The Privacy Policy covers personal information currently held or collected in the future. Unless we are otherwise notified in writing, we assume consent is given for MEBP's continued use, collection, retention and disclosure of personal information. If consent is withdrawn, subject to legal or contractual restrictions, eligibility for Plan benefits may be jeopardized.
