Terminal Illness

Terminal Illness

If a Member has a terminal illness, all the forms applicable to an Approved Leave of Absence must be completed as required.

In addition, the Pension Plan has a provision for a Member with a Life Shortening Illness. Prior to the commencement of a pension payment, if a Member has a terminal illness or a disability resulting in a shortened life expectancy whereby the Member’s life expectancy is to be shortened to less than two (2) years and is so certified by a licensed medical doctor, licensed to practice under the laws (of a province or the place where the Employee resides), the Trustees may accept this as termination due to shortened life expectancy and upon request by the Member refund a lump sum immediate payment of the Commuted Value of the Member’s Pension Benefit accrued to date including any portion that may be Locked-in. If a Member who is entitled to receive a lump sum payment under this section has an eligible spouse, before payment is made to a Member, the eligible spouse must complete any appropriate waiver form(s) as prescribed in the Manitoba Pension Benefits Act and/or Regulations and file this form with the Administrator.

If the Member would like more information in regard to this Pension Plan provision, please have them contact the MEBP Administration Office directly.
